Achievement Improvement Zones (Department of Education and Early Childhood Development)

Data » Overview

The basis of Patrick Griffin’s work within the AIZ is focused primarily on the use of data to improve teaching practice and student achievement.

The approach focuses squarely on the absolute level of learning and development of the child.

While it is acknowledged that ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, language background, and learning ability can all affect the rate students will learn, teachers need to focus instead on what the students have to learn, what they are ready to learn, and what resources it will take to move them even a small amount on the learning progression.

Student ethnicity, gender and so forth are reasons for differences in students’ rate of achievement, however, they are not reasons why they do not learn. The teacher is the most significant factor in improving student achievement.

In working with our schools, Griffin will forge the link between assessment and teaching. Collaborative team approaches are mandatory.

There will be 2 data collections within the year (April and October) – On Demand Progress Tests in Reading and Number.
